Avalon Parade, Avalon
This apricot-veneer 1960 home was bland, cramped, tired and old.
It faced the road north-east with a hill behind, with no consideration given to the solar aspect or prevailing winds. Budget constraints meant that 85% of the original home had to remain.
The final design is a modern home with enticing tropical features. The design captures the upward and downward airflows creating a naturally cool space, with the use of louvers set in western red cedar frames, and a large vented Balinese-style roof over the veranda.
Improvements include new windows, kitchen and bathrooms, and increased floor space through "harvested" wasted space and extended bath and bedrooms.
